Exciting news from RAUSU, Hokkaido! Two incredibly rare white killer whales, often referred to as “phantoms” due to their scarcity, were recently spotted off the coast of Shiretoko Peninsula on June 17. A lucky sightseeing cruise staff member managed to capture several breathtaking pictures of these extraordinary marine mammals in action.
This sighting marks a special occasion as it is the first time since 2021 that two white orcas have been seen simultaneously. While one was spotted in the waters off Rausu last year, the sight of two together is truly a remarkable sight to behold.
Captain Masato Hasegawa, of Shiretoko Nature Cruise, was thrilled to witness the two white orcas swimming powerfully through the waves. He described it as a once-in-a-lifetime event for their tourists, who were all filled with joy at the incredible sight.
Professor Hiroshi Oizumi, an expert in marine ecology at Tokai University, explained that the unusual white coloration of these orcas could be due to either albinism or leucism. However, the exact reason behind their white appearance remains a mystery, adding to the mystique and wonder of these majestic creatures.
As we continue to marvel at the beauty and rarity of these white killer whales, let's remain hopeful that future sightings will shed more light on their unique characteristics. Let's stay curious, appreciative, and ready to learn more about the wonders of our natural world. Who knows what other surprises nature has in store for us!
